Making the Most of National Time Management Month

Any time you’re feeling rushed and pushed around as a caregiver, it’s probably due to time management issues. Since February is National Time Management Month, this is the perfect time for you to get a better handle on where your time is going.

Plan Your Schedule Before Anyone Else’s.

This might sound backwards, especially if you’re handling your elderly family member’s schedule as well as the schedule for other family members, but it’s vital. If you don’t put your schedule in your calendar or planner before anyone else’s, you’re never going to have any time for yourself. You have to carve out time for yourself before everyone else gets a chunk of you.

Don’t Forget to Glance into the Future.

It’s really easy to forget this, but there are events sneaking up on you in your schedule. It can help if you make it a point to look ahead in your calendar at least a couple of times a week. When you do that, you’ll find that fewer future events are creeping up on you and catching you by surprise.

Make Some Lists.

Brain dumping, or putting everything that is running through your head constantly into a list, is a fabulous way to make sure you’re not missing anything. Take a blank piece of paper and five minutes and just write and write. Once you’re done, you can figure out what to do with everything.

Figure out Who Can Take on Some of Your Tasks.

No matter how badly you want to handle every single task on your list, it’s just not always humanly possible. After you’ve written everything out, you can more readily see whether there are some tasks you can delegate to other people. Another great option is to hire home care providers to take over big groups of tasks and free up some of your time.

Avoid Putting off Planning.

Where you might get into trouble is if you start to put off planning sessions. Regular planning sessions help you to consistently do a brain dump, check out what’s coming up in your schedule, and evaluate whether you need to line up extra help now for later. These planning sessions don’t have to take a lot of time, but they’re vital to keeping your time management on track.

Periodically revising your schedule and what you personally handle is a great way to ensure that you’re not trying to take on too much all by yourself. This gives you a chance to sort out what you absolutely have to do and what others can take over.
