Home Care Services in Wellington FL: Keeping Our Elderly Healthy

Home Care Services – Health Tips for the Elderly

There isn’t really an exact age for when someone is elderly. People may assume senior starts at age 55 or 60 and elderly starts at 75 or 80. But in reality, it just depends on where you get your information from. Because of physical ailments, the word elderly might apply to some people at a younger age than it does to others.

Who wants good health?

Good health applies to all ages, but since the effects of bad health habits are more apparent when one grows older, the elderly years are an especially crucial time to adhere to good health habits.

It’s difficult to assign a one size fits all solution for good health to everyone. However, there are some basic tenants that most health organizations would agree are essential for laying the foundation of good health.

General good health tips

  • A regular, high quality nutritional intake. In other words, eat good food on a regular basis. A healthy diet must contain a good supply of fruits and vegetables, preferably fresh and unprocessed as often as possible. Other categories of foods like whole grains, proteins and dairy (or sources of calcium) are also important to incorporate.
  • Smoking has never contributed to good health. It is even more of a health risk in old age. It is never too late to quit, and no matter how long a person has been smoking, quitting can produce a significant health improvement.
  • Alcoholic beverages should be taken minimally if at all.
  • Stay active physically by walking, gardening, swimming, cycling or any other exercise that suits the elderly body well.
  • Keep active socially. Go out and do things with friends, neighbors, family etc. Go to community social events and take part.
  • Stay active mentally. This keeps the brain alert and active and helps in warding off dementia and similar illnesses. Do memorizing practices and games, try solving problems and puzzles. Play word games with friends that cause you to think. Learn a new language! Learn to play a new musical instrument; listen to classical music.
  • Go for regular health checkups. This helps to catch problems in the bud when they can still have an effective solution and positive outcome.
  • Keep a positive mental attitude. Don’t get lonely or isolated.
